Artist Spotlight - SOMg by Mike Paora

As the artist simply puts it "We throw far too much into landfills! How can I help? Pull all the timber out and make stuff." 

Mike Paora the artist behind SOMg an anagram for 'Straight Out Of My Garage' work was born out of a distaste for the wastefulness of the building industry, where he spent most of his working career as a seasoned carpenter.  His modern and skilfully designed timber art pieces are all constructed from salvaged timbers and materials, breathing in new life into these materials.

His work highlights the inherent beauty of these unique timbers, many of which are no longer readily available. Inspired by his cultural heritage and a deep respect for nature, Mike's creations reflect his commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. Residing in Whangārei and of  Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Tūwharetoa descent he continues to create pieces that showcase the charm and characteristics of New Zealand's native timbers.
